Miller Systems was tasked with redesigning, reorganizing, and re-implementing the WGBH intranet – a much used resource by hundreds of WGBH employees.
Information Architecture: After an in-depth inventory of hundreds of pages of content (spread over dozens of smaller department sites) from the existing but poorly maintained intranet, Rob and his partners at Miller Systems were able to craft a usable and coherent IA strategy. Staff members would be able to focus on needs localized to their departments while still feeling connected to the larger WGBH community.
Wireframing: With an strategy in place, Rob drafted dozens of wireframes and functional specifications (hundreds of pages of documentation!) corresponding to the variety of purpose-built experiences – everything from department landing pages to cafeteria menus. These detailed plans guided the content management and design implementation.
Web Design: Rob based the design of the intranet pages and components using design cues from the then-current public WGBH website. This greatly accelerated the design process and maintained fidelity to brand guidelines.
Content Management: WGBH’s intranet was implemented using SharePoint as a web content management tool (to tie in with other internal infrastructure projects.) Here Rob developed expertise in crafting usable experiences out of SharePoint’s limited (at the time) web content management tools.
Content Migration: Due to the volume of content that required manual migration, Rob created detailed migration tools to help WGBH content editors gather material from disparate sources and re-combine them into coherent intranet pages and document repositories.
